Espaillat was born September 27,1954 in Santiago, Dominican Republican. His family moved to New York when Espaillat was a child. After graduating from high school in Manhattan he earned a B.S. in political science from Queens College. Following school he served as the Manhattan Court Services Coordinator for the NYC Criminal Justice Agency. Later he worked as Director of the Washington Heights Victims Services Community Office. He began his public office for Community Board 12 and is currently a member of the New York Senate.
