Qarmout was born in Jordan as one of nine children. His family immigrated to the U.S. in the mid-70's. Qarmout's parents owned and operated a convenience store which grew into a small franchise. After graduating high school Qarmout earned a B.A. from the University of Hawaii and an M.S.W. from Rutgers University. Following his undergraduate studies, Qarmout worked in the family business which he bought 1995 and ran for 14 years, eventually selling it to his brother. During that time Qarmout began his work as a professor at County College of Morris where he continues to teach today. He is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate from New Jersey in 2012.
