Doherty was born in 1959 in Attleboro, Massachusetts. After graduating from high school he earned his bachelor’s degree in Criminology from Roger Williams University. Following his undergraduate degree Doherty joined the Rhode Island Police force in 1980. Doherty served in the force for 24 years, retiring as a Major. He earned 24 awards for his police work. In 2004 Doherty joined Roger Williams University as director of public safety. Three years later he rejoined the State Police as Colonel, Superintendent and Commissioner of the Department of Public Safety. He served there for 4 years, stepping down in April 2011. Doherty is running for a seat in the U.S. House of Reps for Rhode Island’s 1st district in 2012.
