After graduating from high school Dewhurst earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Arizona. Following school Dewhurst enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. Upon returning home he continued to work in defense for the CIA and the State Department. Dewhurst left government service to work in the private sector. In the early 1980’s he started a business which struggled during the oil and gas market busts, but eventually recovered. Dewhurst began his political career as the Texas Land Commissioner. In 2003 he was elected Lieutenant Governor and President of the Texas Senate where he still serves. He is running for a seat in the U.S. Senate in 2012 for Texas. Dewhurst is in the Texas Rodeo Cowboy Hall of Fame.
