
Johnson was born and raised in North Dakota. He went to school at the University of New Mexico where he graduated in 1975 with a degree in science. Shortly after college Johnson founded a construction company, Big J Enterprises, a successful company which Johnson sold in 1999. Johnson entered and won the 1994 New Mexico Gubernatorial election. Johnson served two terms as Governor.
