Stein was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating high school she attended Harvard University where she earned both her bachelor's degree and M.D. Following school Stein worked as a physician. Her interest in public policy began as she believed politicians were not sufficiently protecting children from environmental toxins. As a result, Stein became an activist for clean environmental policies and testified before numerous state and local legislative bodies. Since 2002 she has run for Massachusetts State Representative, Secretary of State, Town Meeting Representative twice and Governor twice. She was victorious in the Town Meeting Representative elections. Stein is running for President in 2012.
